Who gets named when buyers ask AI about cold email tools

Sample captured 2026-09-24 · Asia/Shanghai · 10 buyer questions · Google AI Overview + Perplexity Free · No visibility guarantees

I asked the same ten buyer questions a B2B founder or agency operator would type into an answer engine. This page records what showed up — brands, source chips, and the gap between Google’s classic results and the AI Overview on the same SERP. Useful even if you never buy a brief.

Method (read this before the charts)

Brand tallies below count Google AI Overviews only unless noted. Perplexity Free cut most answers mid-sentence, so those rows are evidence of reachability and early brand mentions — not full answer text.

The ten buyer questions

  1. best cold email tools for B2B outreach 2026
  2. Instantly vs Smartlead for agencies which should I pick
  3. best cold email software with unlimited mailboxes under $100
  4. lemlist alternatives for cold email deliverability
  5. best cold email tool for solo founder sending 500 emails a day
  6. Apollo vs Instantly for cold outreach which is better
  7. what should I look for when buying cold email software 2026
  8. best free or cheap cold email warmup tools
  9. Smartlead vs Lemlist vs Instantly comparison for B2B SaaS
  10. is Woodpecker still good for cold email in 2026

Which brands appear most (Google AI Overview)

Across the 10 Overviews, brand mentions (product-name matches, not the English word “outreach”):

BrandAppeared in N / 10 Overviews
Instantly10
Smartlead8
Apollo6
Lemlist5
Saleshandy4
Salesforge3
Mailforge3
Amplemarket, Inframail, Snov.io, Warmforge2 each
Woodpecker, Reply.io, TrulyInbox, Warmbox, Puzzle Inbox1 each

Perplexity Free (truncated) still leaned the same direction when it named anyone: Smartlead (3), Instantly (2), Saleshandy (1), Lemlist (1) across seven usable snippets.

What the answers actually sound like

They rarely crown a single “winner.” They route by job:

Pick Smartlead if you run an agency managing multiple clients, and choose Instantly if you want a simpler, all-in-one tool with a built-in lead database for smaller setups.
— Google AI Overview, Q2, 2026-09-24
Neither Apollo.io nor Instantly.ai is universally better; Apollo wins for all-in-one B2B prospecting and multichannel sequences, while Instantly wins for pure high-volume cold email deliverability and inbox scaling.
— Google AI Overview, Q6, 2026-09-24
Yes, Woodpecker is still a good cold email tool in 2026 for small businesses, solo operators, and lean teams, though it struggles to compete with platforms like Instantly or Smartlead at high-volume or multi-client agency scales.
— Google AI Overview, Q10, 2026-09-24

Woodpecker only showed up clearly when asked about by name. On the open “best tools” and “under $100” prompts, the Overview’s shortlist stayed Instantly / Smartlead / Apollo (plus Saleshandy or Salesforge depending on framing). That absence pattern matters more than a G2 star average.

Which source types get cited

Google AI Overview chips in this sample were mostly named publications and niche comparison sites, not classic review directories. Observed chip / domain patterns included:

Perplexity Free (when it exposed domains) pulled chips like pipeline.zoominfo.com, salesforge.ai, instantly.ai, hunter.io, amplemarket.com, reddit.com, gmass.co — same mix of vendor pages, listicles, and Reddit.

Gap: Google top results vs AI answers

On the primary “best cold email tools…” query, the same SERP showed:

So the Overview is not inventing a parallel universe — it compresses the comparison-blog + Reddit consensus into a job-to-be-done answer. The practical gap for a small vendor:

  1. Winning a blue link on a Reddit thread does not guarantee you are in the Overview’s shortlist.
  2. If the consensus listicles never frame you as “best for [narrow job],” the Overview has nothing crisp to route you into.
  3. Asking a brand by name (Woodpecker) resurrects a fair, hedged answer; open category prompts mostly ignore it.

Five stealable takeaways for this week

  1. Publish one job-routed comparison page, not another “11 best tools” clone. The Overviews already think in agency vs solo vs data-bundled vs personalization. Write the page a buyer would ask aloud: “Instantly vs Smartlead for agencies” with a clear pick-by-constraint table. Cite real pricing units and what is not included.
  2. Get named inside the listicles Overviews already chip. In this sample those were niche comparison blogs and Reddit stack posts more often than G2. Pitch or earn a factual correction / “best for X” slot on two sites that already appear as chips — with evidence, not PR fluff.
  3. Make deliverability infrastructure boringly scrapable. Buying-criteria Overviews lead with warmup, mailbox rotation, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, placement testing. If your docs bury that under marketing adjectives, you lose the “what should I look for” answers even if your product is strong.
  4. Run a named-prompt check weekly. Log the open category prompt and the “is [Brand] still good…” prompt on the same day. Absence on open + presence on named is a different action (messaging / third-party framing) than absence on both (discovery).
  5. Price-unit clarity beats feature checklists in under-$100 answers. Instantly and Smartlead win those Overviews on “unlimited mailboxes + warmup on the base plan.” If your plan meters seats or contacts differently, say so in one sentence on the pricing page so comparison authors stop guessing.

What this sample does not prove

It does not prove market share, citation rates, traffic lift, or that changing a page will move an Overview next week. Engines change. Location, account, and date matter. Ten prompts are enough to see a pattern; they are not enough to sell a ranking product. Label every follow-up run with date and engine the same way.
